The New Jersey Audubon Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary offers a rich mix of learning, wildlife, and quiet exploration. At the heart of the property is the Hoffman Center for Conservation and Environmental Education, which features an environmental learning center, a tree-top observation deck, rotating exhibits, a Nature Store, and the Wayrick Art Gallery. Just outside, a popular bird-feeding station draws a steady stream of feathered visitors and can be viewed comfortably from inside the building. One of the sanctuary’s most distinctive features is its deer exclosure, which protects 14 acres of habitat and allows visitors to see firsthand how landscapes recover when given the chance.
Beyond the center, well-marked trails ranging from short loops to longer walks wind through forests, open fields, and floodplain along the headwaters of the Passaic River. The sanctuary supports remarkable biodiversity, including more than 60 nesting bird species and hundreds of seasonal sightings, especially during spring migration. From warblers and woodpeckers to foxes, owls, and other wildlife, Scherman Hoffman invites visitors to slow down, look closely, and experience the NJ Highlands through nature, education, and observation.
