Whether you’re flying in, driving from nearby cities, or exploring county by county, the region is well-connected and easy to navigate. With scenic routes, convenient access points, and flexible transportation options, reaching your Highlands experience is part of the journey.
Getting Here by Air
Several major airports serve the New Jersey Highlands, making air travel a convenient option for visitors coming from outside the region.
Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is the closest major airport and offers the widest range of domestic and international flights. From Newark, most NJ Highlands destinations are reachable by car in under an hour.
Other nearby airports include LaGuardia Airport (LGA), John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), and Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). These airports may offer additional flight options depending on your origin and schedule.
For private charter, corporate, and recreational flights, the Morristown Airport offers direct access to the region.
Rental cars are available at all major airports, providing easy access to the NJ Highlands once you arrive.
Driving In
Driving is the most flexible way to reach and explore the New Jersey Highlands. Major highways and well-maintained roads connect the region to surrounding metropolitan areas.
From New York City, visitors can reach the eastern NJ Highlands via Routes 17, 287, and 80. Travel time typically ranges from 45 to 90 minutes, depending on destination and traffic.
From Philadelphia, Routes 202, 206, and 78 provide access to the southern and central parts of the NJ Highlands. Most destinations are reachable within 90 minutes to two hours.
Visitors traveling from other New Jersey metro areas can use Routes 80, 78, 287, and the Garden State Parkway to access different counties throughout the region.
Once in the NJ Highlands, scenic backroads and byways make exploring between towns and attractions enjoyable and straightforward. Driving allows you to explore at your own pace and makes it easy to hop between counties, attractions, and scenic stops along the way.
Getting Here by Train
Train service offers a convenient option for visitors who prefer not to drive into the region. NJ Transit provides rail service to several towns located within or near the NJ Highlands.
Lines such as the Morris and Essex Line, Montclair Boonton Line, and Raritan Valley Line connect New York City and surrounding areas to stations in Morris, Somerset, and nearby counties. From these stations, visitors can use local taxis, rideshare services, or rental cars to reach nearby attractions.
Train travel pairs well with a car-based itinerary, giving visitors flexibility while reducing the stress of city driving.
Getting Around NJ Highlands
Once you arrive, driving is the best way to explore the New Jersey Highlands fully. Attractions, parks, farms, and towns are spread across seven counties, and many are best reached by car.
Rental cars are widely available near airports and train stations. Visitors are encouraged to plan routes in advance, especially when exploring multiple counties in a single trip. Allow extra time for scenic drives and spontaneous stops, which are part of the NJ Highlands experience.
Public transportation within the region is limited, so having access to a car provides the greatest flexibility. Parking is generally available in towns, parks, and attraction areas, often at little or no cost.
Tips for a Smooth Trip
- Check travel times during peak hours, especially when driving from major cities. Weekends and seasonal events can increase traffic in popular areas.
- Plan extra travel time between stops – distances may be short, but scenic roads often invite slower driving and spontaneous stops. Cell service is generally reliable, though downloading maps ahead of time is recommended for more remote areas.
